Salem Fitness Center in Salem, MAOctober is breast cancer awareness month. You can fight breast cancer and other types of cancer by eating right and staying physically active. Even better, you can get help with both from your Salem Fitness Center.

Healthy lifestyle choices like nutrition and physical activity are factors that can help prevent breast cancer. These choices can also improve survivorship in those diagnosed with cancer.

Particularly for postmenopausal women, being overweight or obese can increase your risk for breast cancer. In fact, one of the most important things a woman at risk for breast cancer can do is maintain a healthy weight. This is accomplished through a healthy diet and regular exercise.

If you want to stay healthy and breast cancer free, it is important for overweight women to lose weight and then maintain that new healthy weight. Regular exercise and healthy eating habits will help achieve these goals.

It is certainly challenging to lose weight, but it is important to know that small changes will make a big difference. If you are just starting to exercise and not used to it, start with a five to ten minute walk and gradually increase the time. Having an exercise partner, whether it is a friend or a personal trainer, to help keep you motivated and interested is very helpful.

If you are concerned about your weight talking with a nutritionist, or joining a weight loss or exercise program is helpful. When trying to make healthy eating choices, start by making one new food change weekly.
